This entire genus has been divided & renamed.
Not all of the species below are associated with Lophophora or Astrophytum but they are included here for sake of clarity.
Hamatocactus bicolor can be found listed as = Thelocactus bicolor
This is incorrect as "Hamatocactus bicolor (Galeotti ex Pfeiffer) I. M. Johnston" is in error.
Hamatocactus bicolor (Terán & Berlandier) I.M. Johnson is now considered to be Thelocactus setispinus
Hamatocactus hamatacanthus is now Ferocactus hamatacanthus

Hamatocactus setispinus is now Thelocactus setispinus.
For reasons mentioned on the linked page we are employing the name H. setispinus.)
Hamatocactus sinuatus is now Ferocactus hamatacanthus ssp. sinuatus
Thelocactus setispinus appears here as Hamatocactus setispinus.
Hamatocactus uncinatus is now Glandulicactus uncinatus in the Flora of North America
Hunt et al. prefers the name Sclerocactus uncinatus and this species has also been placed in five other genera that we do not mention here.

It is important not to confuse Ferocactus hamatocactus (Muehlenberg) Britton & Rose (Echinocactus hamatocactus) with Ferocactus haematocanthus (Salm-Dyck) Backeberg & Knuth (Echinocactus haematocactus).
